Pennsylvania State Education Association Members Continue the Effort to Eliminate American Indian Mascots The PSEA Executive and Resolution Committees met in April to discuss ongoing efforts to eliminate American Indian mascots and logos in Pennsylvania public schools. A proposed resolution will parallel the National Education Associations position. The proposed resolution reads: The PSEA deplores prejudice based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender, age, disability, size, marital status or economic status and rejects the use of names, symbols, caricatures, emblems, logos and mascots that promote such prejudice. This proposed generic resolution does not directly address the specific and prolific use of American Indian mascots and logos in public schools. Think about it! There is no greater target of ractial and cultural stereotyping in our schools than American Indians. It is time to honor Indian peoples demands to eliminate these stereotypes. The mascots and logos DO NOT honor American Indans. Committed PSEA members will continue to work through educational, political, and legislative means toward this end. Please support the work of PSEA and Cankú Lúta by wearing a lapel pin which states "Indians are People Not Mascots." Contact the education department or teachers union in your state to get the effort going. For more information, call our office at (412) 243-8768.
